" I firmly believe that decisions of faith, personal autonomy, health, and family planning are private. I will not tell you what to do and I would expect the same."

I'm sorry, Lindsay, but where do you get off being so reasonable? (that was sarcasm in case it doesn't translate).

You're obviously not a Republican (well, at least, I don't think so, but I digress) but the hell of it is, that is actually a CONSERVATIVE position. Or at least it should be.

I don't remember where I heard this, but I did hear that back before Roe, Barry Goldwater's daughter became pregnant out of wedlock. And what did Sen Goldwater – one of the most extremely 'Conserative' politicians of the 20th century tell his daughter? He said "the state has no business in what you decide." Or at least, that's the tale I heard. You could look it up...

Still, it's hard to fathom that Barry Goldwater was one of the last of the truly reasonable "Conservatives."

I shall now read the rest... had to get that off my chest first.

I actually chortled out loud. I agree. We would be a much better nation with a true conservative party.

I wish I could give your comment more than a single “like” but that’s all that is allowed.

When I tell people that I remember when there was a actually a Liberal wing to the GOP (yes they were really moderates but that was how they were described) they look at me like I’m crazy.

Not that Barry was one... 😉

Thank you Lee Troutman. I guess you're of a similar vintage, old enough to remember when the country had to reasonable opposition par...... oh hell, I guess it's always been nutz. Just not THIS nutz.

Oh my. I can’t believe how shocked I felt at reading about the “relationship” between Buchanan and the Supreme Court. I fantasize in my mind ways to go back in time and remove Buchanan from office. I truly felt horror about this moment in time. But now that I’ve stepped back and regained my composure, I can definitely see where you where coming from in your wonderfully worded piece. I can’t help wonder how this timing came about, in our time not 1857. 1857 is a year I had not dwelt deeply in. Thank You for your essay. I can hardly wait for your new book. No I have not seen the cover yet and while there is no doubt it’s all things a cover should be, it’s the words behind the cover that I can hardly wait for. Now to go jump down the rabbit hole and read Lincoln’s response. Good thing it’s early in the day for me. It’s likely to be a deep rabbit hole.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I felt the same way, sometimes history just blows my mind.

Really good! I enjoyed this trip through history and the context you provided for the current and likely future injustices levied by the Judiciary Branch in league with the sexist and racist beliefs that so often prop up illegitimate power--whether this power is illegitimately taken by a president, as with Buchanan, or by the wrecking ball of a minority political party like Trump’s,which is aggressively pursuing control of all three branches of government, overrunning institutional bounds as it goes. However, as in Buchanan’s time, there are a great many people who are not going to go along with such a theft of human rights and autonomy. Reproductive rights for women, the right of bodily autonomy and non-interference by the state--these will be a Third Rail for the MAGA Republicans, only they are either too blinded by their propaganda and ideology, provided by an “off the shelf” Christian fundamentalism, or just too intoxicated and high with their present status in the game for power, to clearly see this coming.
