Great comments and arguments for exercising the right. I have also thought it must have been maddening for Mrs Adams to have been a rising star merchant while John was in Europe, managing Mr Lovell's "attention" to get her husband paid, raise a future president and still not be worthy of voting.
I appreciate this post! I referenced your entire article, but especially the last two paragraphs, in a reminder I sent out to my (mostly 20-something) soccer group. We all live in North Carolina, and if we vote, we can truly make a difference. So - thank you for your words, and I look forward to reading more.
Your first line made me realize how very close we are to election day and the importance that this year vote has.
I helped us get the vote at age 18, and I’ve voted in every election since. I took my son to the polls with me every time I voted and when he walked into our polling place on his own at age 18 to cast his ballot, our local poll workers applauded and congratulated him.
I try to get my students (college) to understand why they need to get in and vote. And if they say they won’t I tell them the same thing you say. If you don’t vote, you don’t get to complain.
I cast my first ballot in the middle of the Gulf of Tonkin, The only election I have missed was a Fort Worth municipal election as I was out of town. For the past 6 years I have been going to the county seat in Morrison, Il as soon as early voting opens, ergo I have already voted.
Several years ago I discussing women's status in many years past with a female friend. I asked her if she knew what punishment a man night receive for pulling her into an alley an raping her. She of course said he would be charged with rape. I shook my head and told her, "no despoiling property" as she was considered her fathers property. She was aghast! Oh yes, this friend was quite into politics too.
Keep writing Dr. Chervinsky as I wish to keep reading!
Bought latest book, read the book, liked the book.
I appreciate it!!!
I love wearing my "I voted" sticker, esp. around my Idaho Republican friends. They often smirk. I always smile. Voting gives me great joy.

Here's to a bright future for our democracy.

Abigail. Looks like she lost a dollar and found a penny!
I find it interesting that on a post about intellectual heft, suffrage, and civil rights, your response is her portrait isn’t pretty enough.
Jeepers. Not much to look at was she.
Good morrow Milady Chervinsky
